poppers

Well, it looks like I spoke too soon about not updating your links. CJB.net has popups that prompt you to download rather suspicious looking software (I’m put off by anything that tries to install itself on a system via popup, no matter how benign the actual program is), so I decided that since the blogspot address is almost as easy to type as the CJB, I might as well dump it (the prohosting version of the site still doesn’t work properly). So, just to make it clear once more; this site is only accessible through ilevel.BLOGSPOT.com

Kindly update your links.

See you in the future, Conan.

you’ve got red on you

This weekend, I suggest you go and see Shaun of the Dead, not just because it’s one of the best English language films released this year, but also because I command you to.

This Edgar Wright film stars Simon Pegg (who, along with the director, co-wrote Shaun…) as routine-ridden TV salesman Shaun, and no, unlike what the title suggests, he’s not dead, but pretty much everyone else is. Undead, I mean. Unlike other movies of the genre, the actual undead are not the focus of the movie, which is the main reason I like it. This isn’t some exercise in machismo and silicone enhanced breasts bursting from tight, sweat soaked t-shirts like most American horror movies; for once, the tagline for a movie reads right: “A Romantic Comedy. With Zombies.”

It’s not just a romantic comedy either; there’s some pretty emotional scenes in here, and only one gun (well, a few more show up at the end, but it doesn’t matter). This will sound screwy, but Shaun… is the closest we’ll get to a realistic account of what would happen if, indeed, shambling zombies did rise up and clog the streets. The characters are normal people, they behave in normal ways and come up with normal plans, and because of their utter lack of traditional heroics they end up being much more heroic. Simon Pegg, in particular, puts in a great performance, and the supporting cast (even the zombies!) are anything but cardboard cutouts.

But perhaps Shaun…‘s greatest achievement is its subtle messages about our own zombie society. To say more would be heading into spoiler territory, so I’ll just say this, to those who’ve seen it: That was one hell of an epilogue, huh? This part of the film will probably be lost on most viewers who just want to see blood and guts (and in that department it doesn’t disappoint, going for fewer gory scenes, but more effective ones).

So shamble to your nearest cineplex and see a guy in a white shirt take on hordes of gurgling undead armed only with a cricket bat (which, if you’ve ever held one, you’ll know is much more effective than those puny, light baseball bats). Don’t see it if lots of gore and violence puts you off, though. The equally excellent Ying Xiong might be a good alternative.

And remember, if you get cornered, bash ’em in the head, that seems to work out.

bad hair day

Well, major modelling is complete on what has come to be called Ripley; my first-ever 3D character model. I’m not at all happy with the hair; it’s a simple extruded loop mesh, far too many polys, far too complex looking for this character (the character’s body, btw, is around 870 polys unsubdivided — A PlayStation One could handle those!). I have an idea as to a v2 hair which I’ll work on tomorrow.

Rigging the model with a skeleton was time consuming, especially assigning the vertices, but once you keep yourself calm, clear and methodically checking every step you do (and saving often!) it soon becomes, if not second nature, at least an enjoyable exercise. I only had one mistake; a single stray vertice unselected in the lower thumb, which caused the whole thumb to warp when I moved any part of the palm or arms. Fixing it was a ten second process, but I’ll tell you, the first time I rotated the arm and watched the thumb stretch and squeeze like chewing gum, my heart sank a litte and I wondered how I was ever going to succeed in 3D.

Tomorrow I should finish the hair, and get working on a simple dojo for the character to muck about in. There’s an animation challenge I’d really like to get something done for.

To think that up until a week ago I knew next to nothing about Blender (Samir has been tutoring me at every step), and already I’m considering animation (something even Samir knows nothing about vis a vis Blender)! Oh well, only way to learn is to stick both feet in.

kiss me you fool!

I’m working on something 3D this weekend. Blender is a lot more logical in its modelling workflow that any other 3D application. The staggered nature of the process (and the lack of an easy UNDO) makes it the equivalent of the QWERTY keyboard for typewriters. It forces you to think your steps through, and in 3D, that’s a very important thing.

More as it happens. I’m very satisfied with it so far.

onward and upward

Welcome to iLevel v1.7. This isn’t quite how I planned it, but my last (free) host had some downtime, and when it got back up some of the cgi files in my blog management software had reset themselves, resulting in me being unable to login to the account (or even to leave a comment on a post, apparently). Unfortunately the host had recently disallowed CHMOD (my site was only working because I had CHMODed everything before the ban), so I couldn’t continue using Greymatter on that host.

I didn’t want to move the whole thing on another host, so decided that, for the time being, at least, it’s back to old Blogger. Not quite as fancy and customised, but it gets the job done quite well. Also, content is king, and I’ve been obsessing over everything but that over the past months. A quick and dirty hosting solution to keep the blog going seems to be best. The site is still accessible through http://ilevel.cjb.net/, so no need to update your links.

So, have a seat, gape at the utter lack of archives, and do leave a comment telling me you’re still here. All three of you.

I’ve been designing the new site, hence the fewer updates to iLevel. Right now, after many, many revisions, I’ve come up with a main page design that I’m happy with. It was pretty tough because of the way I want the site laid out, less like a blog, but still run by a blog-like CMS. Samir has been hunting down any and all possible CMS candidates, and all the good ones require MySQL and PHP (which I know nothing about), but the list has been narrowed down to a couple.

I still have to see if my main page design actually works (it’s just a sketch wight now). It is theoretically possible, but will require some work, especially on the CMS’s end. Thankfully, with CSS, I have no fears about the main page being visually possible. If this was a few years ago and I had to do it, the only option would be Flash, which I want to stay as far away from as possible.

Due to the rather extensive overhaul I need to do, the redesign will be at least a month or two away. I’ll still post here to the 1.6 blog, and some of the content here will be making it over to the site version (2.0), but how much is uncertain. I don’t really want to have a lot of semi-good photos on the site; I’ll weed out everything but AAA content.

The 1.7 intermediate redesign has been scrapped; it would have a been substantial amount of work, so I decided I might as well spend that time on a more permanent solution. Also, these banner ads my free host has put in are a bit annoying, and I don’t want to have to design around them. When 2.0 comes up I’ll spring for hosting anyway, and then the only ads will be of my own 🙂

So, this thing you’re surfing will hopefully be the last ‘blog’ I ever have, and I’m quite happy that — 5 year too late — I’m actually working on a site.
