Dr. Irv's cruciferous cosmic cranium pulverises his enemies with purple power blasts. He used to wear yellow tights before his transformation too -- it was the uniform at his med school.

Cosmocolli.

That name is fabulous.

As are his cheekbones.

Why thank you. I was going for a more Kirby/Lee vibe with this one.

Far out, I totally get that feeling!

I can't think of what ungodly use purple nipples would have though. Ill admit, frankly, it kind of disturbs me to think about it.

When all is said and done, Kirby, Ditko Curt Swan and all the rest of the Silver Age artists have a certain immediacy and vigour to their work that even the most beautiful John Cassaday art doesn't have.

It is, I believe, part of the reason Watchmen still holds up. I remember reading somewhere that Dave Gibbons' art was specifically tailored to evoke the older stuff.

I drew this while flipping through my copy of How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way, whereas The Spud was drawn without that reference.

I dig hard on Alex Toth these days. His simple line and strong blacks make me squeel with girlish glee.

HTDCtMW was my first real exposure to Marvel comics, I got it second hand from my mothers friends son and it showed me things I had never thought about before, but that nontheless stuck in my wee little brain. I still flip through it from time to time. Its a fine book!

Mmmmm....Dave Gibbons...

You are, I take it, aware of this?:

It's very, very good stuff. And really, while a lot of people seems to think Toth is harsh, this is the kind of straightforward stuff I'd kill for (I'm used to clients being much harsher without any rhyme or reason, so I guess that's why).

Toth was known for being a gigantic UBERASSHOLESUPREME! Apparently by the end of his life he was estranged from many friends, and was known for being a really harsh critic.

Man knew how to draw though... oh did he know how to draw!
