what is missing from all commentary on lakshya

We Indians have a tendency to oversimplify matters. So also in the case of Lakshya. It inevitably invites comparisons with JP Datta's Border and LOC, both of which are shoddily made war movies within a typical Bollywood framework, comprising songs, dances and loud dialogues. Even the explosions and bullets sound fake, not to mention dandies and loud mouths masquerading as real soliders. Nana Patekar's role in Prahar as Major Chauhan, the typical hardcore infantry officer, remains unparalled in annals of Bollywood.
Lakshya was a genuine attempt on the part of Farhan Akhtar. He had the sense to get an ace Hollywood cinematographer like Christopher Popp to make a qualitative difference to the feel of the film. Popp raised the level of the movie by several notches, being also instrumental in engineering realistic battle sequences and military drill in action, never before seen or showcased in so called Bollywood `war' movies. Please see my leader article in google.com entitled "Bollywood Battles, reel life constraints of real life war" published on the edit page of The Times of India in March 2004. I argued why Bollywood lacked the competence to make war movies. In Lakshya, characters look and act like real soldiers. Action sequences are realistic, including the sounds of small arms fire. In two or three places it fleetingly reminds you of Saving Private Ryan, the best war film in cinematic history, which will remain a benchmark for the next 50 years, even for Hollywood.
